Podcast: ‘Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi’ Retrospective Review
Our final retrospective review marks the last day before Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theatres in the UK, coming to the US on Friday. The final cinematic installation of the Star Wars saga finishes our countdown with Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.
After a year of planning, Luke, Leia, Chewbacca, and Lando are finally ready to implement their plan to rescue Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, and once they succeed, they can join the Rebellion in their final assault on the Empire’s latest Death Star. In our podcast, we discuss how Return of the Jedi‘s mixture of the fun, space adventure tone from A New Hope and the darker, emotional themes derived from Empire that create the film’s overall feel make it a perfect mixture of the two, and how the these synchronous tones shape the characters’ stories brilliantly. We discuss the weaknesses of the film, however few there are, as well as the effect of watching the whole Star Wars saga in numerical order upon our perceptions of the films individually and the story as a whole.
Return of the Jedi stars Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca, Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, Anthony Daniels as C-3p0, Kenny Baker as R2D2, David Prowse as Darth Vader with voice of James Earl Jones, Sebastian Shaw as Anakin Skywalker, Ian McDiarmid as The Emperor, Frank Oz as Yoda, Warwick Davis as Wicket, Denis Lawson as Wedge Antilles, and Sir Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi.(4.5 / 5)
